Dr. Jonathan C. Roberts
Dr Roberts is a senior lecturer at the School of Computer Science, Bangor University, U.K and is chair of the UK chapter of Eurographics. He joined Bangor University in October 2007, and is a member of the High-Performance Visualization and Medical Graphics Group. He received his BSc in 1992 and completed his Ph.D. in 1995 from the University of Kent, both in Computer Science. His PhD Aspects of Abstraction in Scientific Visualization was awarded after 3 years of study and was funded by the UKs Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). His PhD investigated various interaction and abstraction (summary) techniques to explore 3D volumetric datasets. After his PhD he became a Research Fellow at the University of Kent and then a lecturer in May 1999. In late 2002 he was awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE) from the University of Kent and is a Fellow of The Higher Education Academy.
He sits on the editorial board of the Information Visualization journal Palgrave/Macmillan and is a member of ACM and IEEE and SIGGRAPH. He is a college member of the EPSRC and has reviewed grants for EPSRC, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the UK governments Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) (now the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform). Dr Roberts became a member of Eurographics in 1992 and an Executive committee member of EGUK in 1996. In 2004 he succeeded Rob Fletcher as chair of EGUK. The UK chapter runs an international conference named Theory and Practice of Computer Graphics (TP.CG) and conferences have been run by the UK chapter consecutively since 1983. Dr Roberts was short presentations chair for EG 2001 and was local organizer for EGUKs TP.CG 2004 conference. Furthermore, Dr Roberts is actively involved in other conferences and organizations, for instance, he has been joint chair for SPIE/IS&Ts Visualization & Data Analysis conference since 2000, and is principal chair for VDA2008. He instigated and jointly chaired the International Conference on Coordinated & Multiple Views (CMV) (2003,04,05,06), and has been joint chair for the international conference on Information Visualization (IV) (2003,04,05). He is on the international program committee of several conferences including InfoVis, Information Visualization (IV), Web3d, Visualization, Imaging and Image Processing (VIIP IASTED).
His principal research interests lie in the field of Visualization. He is particularly interested in exploratory visualization (EV) and non-visual visualization (using haptics and sound to present data). Exploratory systems are used in many domains they utilize computer graphics to display complex data, and permit users to explore these datasets. The systems are highly interactive; allow users to display multiple representations; coordinate actions between multiple views; follow different directions and return to previous results. The area of Non-visual Visualization is a growing area. It covers the field of using alternate modalities to present information. He is also interested in visualization and graphics reference models, visualization in Virtual Environments, web-based visualization and virtual reality.
As an educator he is involved in teaching and supervision at various levels (from undergraduate to postgraduate MSc and PhD). He has taught courses on Computer Graphics, Visualization, Text Processing, Web Publishing and Multimedia Technology. As an academic he has had many roles and responsibilities, but most significantly, he was Undergraduate Admissions Officer for the Computing Laboratory at the University of Kent (2000-2006).
